80% of Vedic wisdom was lost by Dvapara Yuga when Brahma asked Vyasa to canonize the shrutis. Before that Vedas were oral traditions. No sage was expert in all the Vedas as there is no adi and no Anta. There is no chronological structure as well. Vyasa compiled the Vedas into 4 parts. He taught Rig Veda to his disciple Paila, the Yajur Veda to Vaisampayana, the Sama Veda to Jaimini, and the Atharva Veda to Sumanta. Vaisampayana was the celebrated Yajnavalkya one of the greatest teachers of Brihadaranyaka Upanishad. Vedas are the Shabda-Brahmn.
Vyasa compiled the Rig Veda by collecting the riks, Sama Veda with Samans, Yajur Veda with Yajus, Atharva veda with chanddas. Rig Veda is made of chants with a certain melodies, Sama Veda has no independent value as it takes most hymns from Rig Veda, Yajur Veda takes many hymns from Rig Veda with many original Formulas called Yajna karma kandas. Each Vedas have 2 main sections- Samhitas and Brahmanas. Brahmans further divided into Aranyakas and Upanishads. Rig Vedas had 21 mandalas, Yajur Veda had 108, Sama Veda has 1000 and Atharva has 50.
